The woman, who was hospitalized Saturday in the French southern city of Montpellier with symptoms of avian flu, has tested negative, doctors said. "All the tests are negative. All suspicion of bird flu has been dispelled," the Public Assistance section of the hospital said. The 32-year-old woman had recently returned from a trip in the Tarsus region of Turkey. She was tested to determine whether she had contracted the deadly H5N1 strain, which has taken more than 80 lives since 2003 worldwide. Experts fear the avian flu virus could mutate into a form that passes easily between humans, possibly sparking a pandemic.
