Bulgarian Journalists Sue State over Freedom of Speech

Bulgarian journalists are to file a complaint in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg against Bulgarian state for threatening the investigating journalism.

The complaint was initiated by the cases with the Romanian journalist George Buhnici and the BBC investigation over corruption in the International Olympic Committee, said lawyer Mihail Ekemdzhiev, presenting the Bulgarian journalists in Strasbourg.

An article from the Bulgarian Criminal Code impedes the journalists from investigating cases of corruption, Ekemdzhiev said in an interview for the National Radio.

The Bulgarian authorities are not enthusiastic about an amendment in the Criminal Code because it would allow journalists to take a very close view on their "jiggery-pockeries", Ekemdzhiev also said.
