Denmark is to present Bulgaria with a submarine on the occasion of its recent NATO entry, the Copenhagen Post reported.
The article reads that Denmark's "housewarming" gift to new NATO member Bulgaria will cost the nation DKK 100M.
Defence Minister Soren Gade is reportedly planning to export one of Denmark's superfluous military submarines to Bulgaria as a "Welcome to NATO" gift. According to information obtained by daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten, Bulgaria was approached in August of this year regarding possible interest in taking over one of Denmark's 40-year-old decommissioned military submarines.
Gade has asked the National Defense Commando to devise a plan for carrying out the donation, after he overruled an initial investigation concluding that the project was too expensive.
Like many of its fellow NATO freshmen, Bulgaria is economically strapped, and currently possesses just two Soviet-built Romeo submarines from the 1950's, the Copenhagen Post article reports.
