Landmark from the time of Bulgarian Samuil (997 - 1014) was discovered at the home of a treasure-seeker. The words engraved on the stone read, "Samuil autocrat of Bulgaria."
At the infringer's home in Samuilovo village, police also found coins of gold, silver and copper dated from different ages. The finds would soon be illegally taken across border.
Experts said that the discovery proved Samuil's kingdom had Bulgarian nature.
The victorious warrior who then became Bulgarian king was born in today's Macedonia. His reign ended in one of the most dramatic moments in Bulgaria's history, in the summer of 1014. It was then the Bulgarian army suffered a crushing defeat near the village of Klyuch. Upon victory, Emperor Basil ordered the 14,000 Bulgarian prisoners blinded. One in every hundred men was left with one eye in order to lead the men home.
At the sight of his crippled soldiers returning, Samuil suffered a heart attack and died.
