Bulgaria Moves to Create Child Adoption Registers

Politics | September 19, 2003, Friday // 00:00

Friday is the deadline for directors of child institutions to send to the Justice Ministry all applications for adoptions submitted by foreign nationals.

In compliance with the amendments of Bulgaria's Family Code passed July 10, the applications are needed so that special registers can be created. The presence of the children's names in the registers was made a condition for possible adoption.

Earlier in the month Bulgaria's Justice Minister Anton Stankov announced that 2,130 agreements for adoption of Bulgarian children by foreigners have been issued since 2001

He explained that there is a stable tendency of increasing the number of the adopted children. In 2001 the number of the adopted Bulgarian kids in 2001 was 825, in 2002 -1114, while starting from January 1 to June 30 the number reached 191.
