Bulgaria: Trump's Victory Could Open Doors for GERB to Partner with Peevski and Pro-Russian "Revival"

Adelheid Wolfl's commentary in the Austrian daily Der Standard discusses the implications of the upcoming US elections for Bulgaria. The phrase “after the elections - new elections” has become a familiar refrain for Bulgarians over the past three years, as they have participated in seven elections due to unstable coalitions that either failed to last or never materialized. The latest elections saw the conservative clientelist party GERB once again receiving the most votes. However, the elections in the US on November 5 could be pivotal for Bulgaria's political landscape.

Should Donald Trump emerge victorious, GERB may feel emboldened to pursue coalition partnerships beyond pro-Western entities. One potential partner that has previously been excluded from consideration is the DPS - New Beginning, led by oligarch and media mogul Delyan Peevski, who faced US sanctions in 2021 resulting in the confiscation of his assets in the US

Peevski is hopeful that a Trump administration could lead to his removal from the sanctions list. If this occurs, it is likely that Boyko Borissov, the head of GERB who has been accused of corruption, would seek to re-establish political and business ties with Peevski.

Furthermore, if Trump wins, parties such as the pro-Kremlin "Revival" or even the Socialists could become viable options for Borissov. Under a Trump presidency, the pressure from Washington to maintain a strict Western orientation for Bulgaria might diminish, positioning Bulgaria alongside Hungary and Slovakia as an EU member state looking towards Moscow.
