Bulgaria: China Reached Lowest Population Growth in Decades

In the past decade, China has had the lowest population growth since the introduction of the one-child policy in the 1970s, whereby each couple was only allowed to have one child. This is evident from the 2020 census, of which the national statistics office announced the results on Tuesday.

China is facing declining birth rates and an aging population. Since 2010, the country’s population has increased by 5.38 percent to 1.41 billion residents. Growth of 5.84 percent was reported between 2000 and 2010.

In 2016, China set a target of reaching a population of 1.42 billion by 2020. The one-child policy, which was introduced in the 1970s to slow down the enormously high population growth at the time, was adapted for that reason. Couples are now allowed to have two children. With the high population, China wants to strengthen economic growth and prosperity.

At the end of April, the Financial Times reported on the basis of insiders that for the first time in fifty years, China would have determined that the population had shrunk.

Those results were not yet confirmed by China, probably because the Chinese government was surprised by the contraction. Experts had predicted that it would take several years to get started.

China currently has the largest population worldwide, but could be overtaken by India in the coming years.
