Bulgaria: Bulgaria’s Chief Health Inspector: We’ll Forget about Masks When 70-75 Percent Are Vaccinated

There are no plans to make vaccination against Covid-19 mandatory, Chief State Health Inspector Angel Kunchev said at a press conference on the occasion of European Immunization Week.

Assoc. Prof. Kunchev was adamant that the "cherished goal" of the countries in the battle with Covid-19 was to vaccinate 70-75% of the population, which Bulgaria also aspires to achieve.

"The amount of vaccines we will receive in May will be twice as high as in April, and in June the planned deliveries are four times larger... We will throw away masks, lift the restrictive measures and return to the normal way of life," the State Health Inspector assured.

He reminded that after the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was proven to be safe, it would come into use, but our country is waiting for the second delivery, as for now the quantities are small.

"We want to use the advantage of this vaccine, that it is one-shot, and provide it for vulnerable groups where a faster effect is needed. For the moment, this is the tourism industry. We want to reassure everyone who wants to vacation in Bulgaria that they will be in a safe environment. There are 80,000 people employed in this industry who are willing to be inoculated and we can give vaccines to all of them. With proper arrangements we can make over 20,000 immunisations per day,” said Kunchev.
