The nationalist VMRO party is seeking annulment of results of voting in Turkey for a new Bulgarian parliament. The party position was made public at a news briefing by Angel Dzhambazki, one of the two VMRO representatives in the European Parliament. He said that his party recognizes the results of the elections and only seeks annulment of the results in Turkey due to multiple irregularities.

VMRO was part of the power-sharing nationalist coalition United Patriots in the previous parliament but failed to clear the 4 per cent barrier for entry in the Legislature after parting ways with its United Patriots partner, NFSB.

Bulgarian migrants in Turkey are known to vote consistently for the Movement for Rights and Freedoms. On the proposal of the United Patriots, the number of voting sections for Bulgarian elections in Turkey and other non-EU countries was limited to 35.

VMRO have sent a reasoned motion to the government, the Prosecutor General, the President of the Supreme Administrative Court and the Supreme Court of Cassation and to Parliament, all of which can ask the Constitutional Court to annul the results from the 35 voting sections in Turkey.

VMRO agents said in one voting section that people were brought in groups to vote for one party only; they did not know how to sign their name and many were illiterate; election papers were moved in and out of the voting section, which is prohibited; voters had the figure 9, the MRF number of the ballot, written on their hands; officials of migrant organizations canvassed for MRF and joined voters into the voting booth, presumably to help them as many were older people.

Dzhambazki said that the voting in Turkey was organized by the Turkish State to the benefit of MRF. "That is interference in Bulgaria's internal affairs and is inadmissible," he said.

Dzhamazki said that they appreciate the meaning of power rotation and don't want to be in Parliament at any cost. The "protest parties", as he called the newcomers in Parliament, have popular support and should have a chance to translate it into parliamentary work, he said. BTA
