Bulgaria Grapples with Soaring Corruption Rates: New Report Reveals Shocking Data
Corruption in Bulgaria has soared to its third highest peak in history, according to a recent report by the Center for the Study of Democracy
There is a new political landscape in Bulgaria after April 4, the opposition vote dominates, said social analyst Kancho Stoychev in an interview with BNR. The 2:1 ratio in favor of opposition-leaning Bulgarian voters has not changed after the summer protests which is manifest in the election results, he believes.
The probability of new elections is significant, Stoychev pointed out. "New elections are inevitable. The question is whether they will come through a caretaker government before the presidential election or after the presidential election."
Stoychev noted that the organization of the elections was "decent", over three million Bulgarians voted - "a perfectly legitimate vote".
"There were unpleasant scenes with vote buying, as always, but without affecting the main results in essence," the sociologist said.
"There's a winner. There is no doubt that this is GERB. BSP fell due to completely wrong strategy and behavior of the leader of the party. It's about totally confused policy-making. BSP, being the largest opposition in parliament, found no way to unite the opposition-leaning Bulgarians", says Kancho Stoychev's in his analysis for the Before All talk show.
Commenting on the small difference between Democratic Bulgaria and MRF, he stated that the votes of MRF always vary within a certain margin, so there is nothing unexpected, and the result of Democratic Bulgaria is good.
The statements of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov last night, according to Stoychev, are based on two key arguments – overcoming the coronavirus crisis and unity needed for tapping into the European Recovery Fund.
"The proposal is perfectly reasonable, but the probability of it being implemented is very low", commented Kancho Stoychev. In his words, Slavi Trifonov would not support GERB and "take such a turn" because his voters ushered him to parliament for other reasons and he has a longer-term strategy.
"The question is whether he would like to govern being dependent on GERB at every step. The answer is ‘no’. The main task this party sets to itself is bringing about change in Bulgaria. This change begins, it doesn't end with this election.'
