Bulgaria: Bulgaria: Sofia Ambulance Service Inundated with Calls, Emergency Teams Overloaded

With the spike in cases of newly infected with Covid-19 in recent days in Sofia, calls to Sofia ambulance service have increased significantly.

Emergency center spokeswoman Katya Sungarska said that in a week alone, there were 1,482 calls for patients with coronavirus symptoms, as 129 of the calls were for children.

About 500 calls are received by emergency medics for a 12-hour duty.

Katya Sungarska urged people to be patient when calling emergency medics, adding:

"We’re working with about 25-30 teams, we can reach 35 teams for Sofia-city, but this is extremely insufficient with the calls we receive. We ask the patients, or those people who may not be patients, but are just worried, to seek their GPs for consultation, not us, because we are simply flooded with calls.

While they are talking to dispatchers, people who really need emergency help can't contact us and wait for thei calls to be put through," the Sofia ambulance service spokesperson said.
