Bulgaria: Eurostat: Every Third Household in Bulgaria Consists of a Lone Bulgarian Archive

About 33% of Bulgarian households or nearly every third household in Bulgaria consists of a lone Bulgarian, according to data from Eurostat analysis of the percentage of single households in the European Union (EU) in 2017. A similar trend is observed across the European Union - Nearly one-third of households there are an adult without children, according to the analysis.

According to data from the last census of the National Statistical Institute (NSI), there is a tendency in Bulgaria to increase the number of single-person households. In 2001, they were about 660,000, in 2011 about 900,000, and today they exceed 1 million out of a total of nearly 3 million households in Bulgaria.

The largest share was the one-person households in the region of Veliko Tarnovo - 38% and Sofia-city - about 36%. The least one-person households are registered in the Kardzhali region - about 22%.

Half of one-person households in Bulgaria consist of non-working persons or pensioners. Households with one pensioner are positioned around 46% in the cities and around 72% in the villages.

The large number of single-person households, consisting of one person aged 65 and over, also raises a number of serious problems in our society related to the disclosure of social and health care services to this category of households. Besides, in every 12 single household in Bulgaria - the person has reduced working capacity or is permanently disabled, according to NSI data.

Recent statistics on household size in the EU show that in 2017 about one third of households in the Member States were with just one adult without children or every third EU household was a single European. The share of single-person households in Sweden was highest - more than 50%.

Households of one person in Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, Finland and Estonia account for between 40% and 45% of households in the countries concerned. The lowest share of single-person households are in Malta - below 20%. Countries with a low share of single households are Portugal, Croatia and Slovakia - 23%, Poland - 24%, Cyprus - 25% and others.
