In March 2017, he was admitted to a hospital with a suspicion of a heart attack.
Bozhidar Dimitrov was a long-time director of NHM, author of dozens of books devoted to Bulgarian history.
Apart from being a scientist, Dimitrov was also known as a politician. He is a member of the BCP since the 1970s and later of the BSP. He left the party in 2009 when he announced he was supporting GERB. Dimitrov took up the post in the first government of Boyko Borisov - Minister engaged with the Bulgarians abroad. The historian recently created his political formation "Kan Kubrat".
