For the first five months of 2018, production and consumption of electricity in Bulgaria decreased, while exports of electricity increased compared to the same period of the previous year, according to data from the Electricity System Operator.

The decrease of the electricity production from 1 January to May 20 is 4.61% to 17 309 160 megawatt hours. Domestic consumption decreased by 6.49% to 15,561,310 MWh. It is likely that for this reason the export of electricity from the country has increased by 16.16 per cent, reaching 1 747 850 megawatths, according to ESO data.

Electricity production from base power plants decreased by more than 10%, as well as the share of renewable energy in the country's transmission network by 2.1% to 492 704 megawatt hours compared to a year earlier. In the electricity distribution network, the share of renewable energy sources fell by 11.71% to 631 682 MWh. There is a significant increase in energy from hydropower plants by 69.3 per cent to 2 265 058 megawatt hours.
