More young people aged between 15 and 24 have worked in Bulgaria during the past year, according to data from the National Statistical Institute. The statistics were presented by the Chief Labor Inspectorate on the upcoming World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which this year is dedicated to a secure and healthy generation and the fight against child labor.
The International Labor Organization's campaign focuses on achieving two of the UN's goals - ensuring a safe and secure working environment for all people by 2030 and closing down all forms of child labor by 2025.
The International Labor Organization highlights workplace health and safety prevention, which will benefit the next generation of working people. The group of young workers includes persons aged 15 to 24, and in our country the number of those working in this age in 2017 was slightly above 148 000 or by 15 000 more than the previous year.
The Chief Labor Inspectorate recalls that young workers' jobs pose more risks because of lack of experience and insufficient physical and mental maturity. On the other hand, NSSI statistics show that the incidence rate for accidents at work for young workers is above the national average and for juveniles 2-3 times higher than the average.
The International Labor Organization recommends workplace prevention for young people, with employers being able to organize safety and health training courses.
On April 28, the memory of those killed in labor accidents is also celebrated. According to NSSI data in the past year there are 79 cases of death at work and the registered occupational accidents are over 2300.
CITUB submitted a report according to which 688 labor accidents were recorded in the first three months of the year or 122 less than the same period last year. The greatest number of accidents occurred last year in Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna, and the smallest in Silistra, Kardzhali and Vidin.
