Bulgaria: Novinite.com Announces Bulgaria's "Personalities in the News" for 2017!

Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) announces Bulgaria's "Personalities in the News" for 2017!

The poll was open in December,  and readers of Bulgaria's Novinite.com had two months to vote until the end of February.

Editors of Novinite.com made the ultimate selection for Person of the Year for 2017— identified as the person or group of people who, for better or worse, wielded the most influence in the previous 12 months. The poll provides insight about how our readers view the people who most shaped the year.

Winners in recent years include Bulgaria's highest-ranking tennis player Grigor Dimitrov, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, former UK Ambassador Jonathan Allen, and many others.

There are five categories this year but only one winner for each.

Business:
Winner - Milena Dragijska-Dencheva

Milena Dragijska-Dencheva has been working in Lidl for 15 years now. She started in 2002 as a regional sales manager for the Stuttgart and Karlsruhe regions in Germany. She continues at the headquarters in Neckarsulm and later in the Austrian unit of Lidl. It is quite logical that Milena Dragijska-Dencheva returns to her home country when Lidl entered the Bulgarian market. Since 2007, she has been the head of the Bulgarian company in the group. Sales of over 15 million leva were realized by Bulgarian manufacturers in Lidl stores in Europe in 2017.

The other personalities nominated in this category are Vladimir Koylazov and Peter Mitev, Chaos Group; Peter Andronov, CEO of CIBANK and UBB.

Politics:
Winner- Eva Maydell

The Bulgarian MEP from GERB/EPP Eva Maidel was elected for the second time for MEP of 2017 and the reason for that is her contribution to the work of the European Parliament.

One of her key priorities is establishing a fully operational Digital Single Market. In digital Europe, among others, she stands for thriving e-commerce, digital entrepreneurship and a tech-savvy and innovative society. She has been chosen as one of the Ambassadors for the European Commission´s initiative e-skills for jobs 2014-2015.

Diplomacy:
Winner - Søren Jacobsen

Sоren Jacobsen is the Danish Ambassador to the Republic of Bulgaria from September, 2017. Since his arrival in Bulgaria, the Danish Embassy has organized numerous charity events like Christmas bazaar and 5km run under the slogan ‘Run to Change Diabetes’. The ambassador regularly participates in lectures, seminars, and friendly meetings. Here is an interview with Mr Jacobsen on Bulgaria's Presidency of the European Council
The other personalities nominated in this category are Irit Lillian, the Israel Ambassador to the Republic of Bulgaria; Nargiz Gurbanova, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Bulgaria

Sport:
Winner - Grigor Dimitrov

Grigor Dimitrov is one of Bulgaria's most loved sportists and an inspiration to many young people who are just grabbing a tennis rocket in their hands. His career-high ATP singles ranking is world No. 3, which he achieved in November 2017 after winning the 2017 ATP Finals. Dimitrov is the most successful Bulgarian male tennis player to date.
The other personalities nominated in this category are Boyan Petrov - zoologist and mountaineer; Antani Ivanov - swimmer

Culture:
Winner - Sonya Yoncheva

When Sonya Yoncheva was on the train for Geneva with a small suitcase and 800 francs years ago, she could hardly have guessed what fate she would have. Then the girl's dream from Plovdiv was only to study opera singing in the  Conservatory.
Yet during her first year in Geneva, she understands that this  will not be enough.
For 10 years on a professional stage, she is recognized as "one of the biggest miracles in the opera for the past 20 years," according to the New York Times, and the Guardian ranks her to the eternal Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland.

The other personalities nominated in this category are:  Marius Kurkinski,  an actor, director, film writer and pop singer and Theodore Ushev - an animator, graphic designer, illustrator and multimedia artist in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The other personalities nominated in this category are: Maya Manolova, National Ombudsman of Bulgaria and Tomislav Donchev, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of European Funds and Economic Policy in the Borisov 2 Cabinet (2014-2017) and Deputy Prime Minister in the Borisov 3 Cabinet.
