For a 10-year period, the population in Bulgaria has decreased by more than 416 000 people or a population of approximately the size of the Burgas District, according to data from Eurostat's analysis of demographic trends in the EU countries.

In 2007, 7 518 000 people lived in Bulgaria, and in 2017 our population has fallen to 7 101 859 people, according to European statistics.

The population of Burgas region was roughly the same as last year, according to NSI data. According to forecasts of the national statistics, the negative demographic trend will continue in the next years, and in only two years in 2020 the population in Bulgaria will fall below 7 million and will be about 6.9 million. We will be about 6 million in 2040, and the first drop below 5 million Bulgarians is expected to be between 2045 and 2050, with 5.9 million and 5.8 million Bulgarians respectively.

Last year, the number of Bulgarians aged 65 and over was 1.4 million, or about 20 percent of the total number of Bulgarians. At the same time, the number of children under the age of 15 was about 1 million, or about 14 percent of the total population.

The main conclusions of NSI analyzes show that the processes of population decline and aging continue in the years; reduces the number of newborn babies as well as total birth rates; the proportion of older people is increasing at the expense of working-age and younger generations.
