The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee is Launching a Campaign to Build a Monument to Ekaterina Karavelova
On the occasion of International Women's Day, March 8, the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee launched a campaign to build the first monument of a woman - a historical personality in Sofia. He will be Ekaterina Karavelova - a teacher, translator, publicist and prominent public figure, and a female rights activist, in her capacity as deputy chairman of the Bulgarian Women's Union and chairman of the Bulgarian branch of the Women International League for Peace and Freedom. Karavelova has made a huge contribution to important public affairs, including the rescue of Bulgarian Jews during the Second World War.
The BHC initiative is a continuation of the "Memorial Women" campaign, launched in 2017, to highlight the contribution of Bulgarian women to the public life in Bulgaria and the development of literature, art, science, architecture, education, law and other spheres. An art event was organized within this campaign, during which temporary memorials of women were placed in key places in Sofia - as a provocation to the public about the complete absence of monuments of women-historical figures in the capital.
Part of the campaign was also a poll that allowed citizens to nominate and vote for the first woman to have a memorial in Sofia. The nomination of Ekaterina Karavelova received the support of the public and the votes of hundreds of citizens.
The BHC recalls that, according to the official data of the Sofia City Museum of History, there is no monument dedicated to a real woman in our history, and less than 6% of all memorial sites (most of which memorial tablets) on the territory of the city are dedicated to women.
BHC invites Metropolitan Municipality, businesses, organizations and citizens to take part in this initiative to honor the memory of a truly decent and deserving woman as well as to launch the crucial process of recording the contribution of women to the historical memory of the capital.
