Fifteen thousand livestock birds will have to be mortified as a bird flu epidemic is raging in the area of Stara Zagora, authorities say.

A large number of bird flu cases have been discovered in several villages near the southern Bulgarian city.

The same steps will be applied in some breeding farms in the area of Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second-largest city, where not enough precaution measures have been taken against the disease.

As many as 15 centers of bird flu have now been established across Bulgaria, according to the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.
