Bulgaria's President Rosen Plevneliev has vowed to do everything within his mandate to save the current Parliament and help political parties form a new government.

In an interview with the Bulgarian National Television before a second round of political consultations at the Presidency, Plevneliev has said these will be aimed at preserving "stability and parliamentary order" and mitigate the political crisis that follows the government's decision to step down.

He has denied reports that an interim government is already being drafted and has called the formation of a caretaker cabinet an option of last resort if no party is able to create a new administration.

"I have the feeling the entire Bulgaria is drafting a caretaker government, but not the President. This is not my task now," he has told the public broadcaster.

Plevneliev, however, has declared readiness to "bear responsibility and, if necessary, create a new caretaker government," but only after consultations are over and a national security council has been held.

The "nationally responsible" decision in this case would be to take "joint action" with his elected successor and work together on appointments to the interim cabinet, Rumen Radev, he has argued.
