Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has said he will work to prevent the political crisis that began on Wednesday from growing into a parliamentary one.

Plevneliev has made the remarks at the beginning of his consultations with GERB, Bulgaria's biggest political party. Boyko Borisov, the Prime Minister in resignation and GERB leader, and Tsvetan Tsvetanov, his deputy at the party and head of its parliamentary faction, are attending the meeting.

Talks with parties will continue through next week and may be followed by a Consultative Council on National Security at his own request, the head of state has added.

"I will continue... pointing out my satisfaction with the fact that that in a very difficult moment of Bulgaria's history, after tough elections for the 43rd National Assembly [Parliament], it was GERB's leadership that took the responsibility for creating a government in a difficult moment."

"For these two years, there have been tangible results. The state calmed down, the economy went up in a robust manner, from a macro-financial perspective the state was stabilized in an impressive way, unemployment reached a historic low, billions-worth modernization projects were started," he has added.

The GERB-led government of Boyko Borisov stepped down earlier this week, with Parliament accepting its resignation on Wednesday.

Plevneliev is now due to hold consultations with parties and coalitions represented in Parliament before handing over mandates to three of them in an attempt to form a new government.

Both GERB and the biggest opposition party and second parliamentary force, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), have already said they will return the mandate without trying to form a cabinet.

The head of state may then hand over the mandate to a party of his own choice. If no government is formed then, a caretaker cabinet will be appointed.

The President has so far created two interim governments as a result of cabinet resignations over the course of nearly five years.
