EU member-states have reached a preliminary compromise on the amounts mobile telecoms may charge each other when their customers are abroad, reported Reuters.
The fees for data exchange turned out to be the apple of discord.
On Wednesday, the ambassadors of the member-states to Brussels supported Slovakia’s proposal. Slovakia is the current President of the council of the EU. It envisages, as of June 2017, an upper limit of EUR 0.01 for the transfer of one MB or EUR 10 for the transfer of one GB. The idea is for this fee to drop to EUR o.ooo5 per MB as of June 2021.
Thus, the average amount for 5 years comes to EUR 0.73 per MB – lower than the ceiling of EUR 0.85 proposed by the EC.
Today’s agreement has to be approved by the competent ministers of member-states in December and then by the European Parliament in order to enter into force.
