Bulgaria: Social Media Picks Up Bulgarian Oppositioner's Vulgar Reference to PM Radan Kanev, leader of Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB)

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has kept a stiff upper lip after a vulgar address used by an opposition party leader - but social media haven't.

Radan Kanev, who heads the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB), on Monday lashed out at the Reformist Bloc coalition, of which DSB is a member, for not being able to withstand pressure from Borisov.

The Reformist Bloc is the junior coalition  partner in Borisov's minority government - but but the DSB itself slid into opposition in December, despite keeping its minister, Petar Moskov, within the cabinet.

Commenting on an ultimatum set by Borisov on RB leaders, Kanev told [BG, slightly edited to underlined the phrase] Nova TV:

“The Reformist Bloc has no leader to tell Borisov: ‘Come on, Uncle C*ck, who are you treating like this? This isn’t your ‘hood and it isn’t the 1990s’.”

The phrase is a literal translation of a phrase by Upsurt, a Bulgarian rap band popular in the 1990s and early 2000s. (Within the song, the line goes on: "you don't have [even] rudimentary manners.")

Kanev apologized for the word, but not for the meaning.

Some rival political party leaders referred Kanev's choice of words as "going beyond idiocy" and "a sign that values are irretrievably lost".

"It is amazing for one to fall below Borisov's level by means of expression," another has said.

Others have proposed that "Bay Huy" (this is how the original version of Kanev's remarK sounds) should be used as "a traditional address in Bulgarian policy", with an even more obscene word potentially used by politicians who have closer ties.

With its typical sense of humor, online newspaper e-vestnik notes on Twitter that in Chinese medicine "bayhuy" is an acupuncture point on the human body, located at the top of the head.

Regardless of Kanev's controversial comment, a meeting between Borisov, Reformist Bloc officials (Minister Moskov included) and the nationalist coalition Patriotic Front which backs the government took place on Tuesday, helping reach a compromise on several issues prior to the November 06 presidential elections - one of the sources of political tension.
