Scotland will begin consultations on a second referendum on independence, announced the First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon.

At a party conference in Glasgow, Sturgeon pointed out that a draft bill on the project will be published next week. It will be the first step towards a new referendum, reported BBC.

The first referendum was held on September 18, 2014. Then 55% of the voters voted “No” on the issue of Scotland’s independence.

Sturgeon announced in front of delegates that she has the right to look for a better option if there is a chance of an unstable future for Scotland as part of the United Kingdom.

“I am determined that Scotland will have the opportunity to rethink the issue of independence and do so before the United Kingdom leaves the EU, if this is necessary to protect the interests of the country,” underlined Sturgeon.

The UK decided to leave the EU on June 24. Then, Sturgeon said that a second referendum is very probable.

A total of 62% of Scottish people voted to remain in the EU, compared to 38% who voted for Brexit.
