The number of people who sought protection in Bulgaria last month has dropped by nearly a quarter compared to August, the refugee agency has said.

The number does not include foreign nationals who crossed into or out of the country without being registered.

As many as 2076 people from 13 countries took the step in September, down from 2776 people in August.

The State Agency for Refugees (DAB) has granted refugee status to 115 people from 1 state.

Sixty have obtained humanitarian status, having come from 2 states.

Stateless people are included in all the above categories.

A rise is seen in the number of protection candidates whose applications are turned down. These include 232 people from 11 states (compared to the 213 declined requests last month).

DAB's statistics for 2016 suggest 14280 have sought protection since January. As many as 490 have been granted refugee status, and 362 have received humanitarian status. Refusals amount to 829 people.
