Bulgaria: GERB, Reformist Bloc Approve Georgieva's Nomination For UN Secretary General BGNES

GERB and the Reformist Bloc approve of the decision of the government to nominate European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva as Bulgarian Candidate for UN Secretary General, stated PM Borisov on Wednesday.

According to the chief of the foreign affairs commission Dzhema Grozdanova (GERB), “if there is a decision on changing the nomination, then there is a good chance.” In her opinion, the nomination of Irina Bokova may still stand if she herself does not take the decision to withdraw.

When asked about the chances of Georgieva to win the position given the fact that her nomination has been put forward so late, Grozdanova stated: “The game is just beginning.” The real vote is in October.

“This comes as no surprise to us. Such a decision is not taken on the basis of emotions but on the basis of the results from September 26. We hold a positive opinion of the decision and we urge the media to do so as well.”

“The nomination of Kristalina Georgieva as a right-wing candidate is good. I think that a right-wing person with right-wing attitudes should head the UN,” said Reformist Bloc deputy Dimitar Delchev. In terms of the chances of Georgieva, Delchev said that they are a matter of negotiations and called for support for Georgieva on the part of Eastern Europe.
