Bulgaria: 86% of 16-Year Old Bulgarians Have Tried Alcohol BGNES

A total of 30% of 16-year old youths in Bulgaria have tried drugs, while 86% of them have tried alcohol.

The results are from a European school research project for alcohol and drugs for 2015 which included over 96,000 pupils in 35 European countries. In Bulgaria, the research was carried out by the National Centre for Public Health and Analyses and the National Centre for Drugs and Drug Addictions.

The most widespread drug in all countries included in the research was cannabis. On average, 16% of the pupils in Europe have tried it at least once. In Bulgaria, the percentage is 27.

According to experts it is worrisome that 30% of the 16-year olds reckon that they have easy access to cannabis.

A total of 6% of the interviewed pupils in Bulgaria have used new psychoactive substances at least once in the last year. The use of amphetamines, ecstasy and cocaine is lower.

While in Europe there is a decrease in the number of 16 year-olds who have tried alcohol at least once – from 89% to 81% - over the last 20 years, in Bulgaria, the level of use has remained unaltered and, in 2015, 86% of the kids at this age have tried alcohol at least once.
