The Syrian national wounded in a shooting on Monday was involved in a people smuggling affair, Interior Ministry sources say, cited by daily 24 Chasa.

The retailer who owns a stand at Iliyantsi, a bazaar on the outskirts of Sofia, allegedly took EUR 100 000 for services that included organizing migrant groups and acting as a broker between them and the smugglers themselves.

However, it seems he failed to provide some of the services but did not give back the money, investigators are quoted as saying.

Part of the information has allegedly been confirmed by the attackers, two Bulgarian nationals detained after the shooting

Mohamed Djoma, 41, has lived in Bulgaria for years on a long-term residence permit.
