The first terrorism trial against migrants in Bulgaria began on Monday, with the Specialized Criminal Court launching a case against three Syrian nationals aged between 22 and 25.

The men were detained in February, while trying to cross illegally into Turkey.

The defendants, who had been granted refugee status in Germany, arrived in Bulgaria from Greece and, after spending a day in the capital Sofia, headed for the border with Turkey.

The prosecution alleges they were trying to join the Islamic State (IS) group and the Muslim Brotherhood.

On Monday, Lawyers for the three Syrian nationals found a controversy in the fact that the defendants were seeking to join both organizations, but at the same time were thought to be members, according to evidence submitted to the Prosecutor's Office.

The next court session has been scheduled for October 18.

In August, the trial was adjourned as the defendents claimed the indictment had not been given to them within the deadlines stated by the law and neither it nor the evidence material had been translated into Arabic.
