Bulgaria: National Revenue Agency To Inspect 1,900 Employers in Sofia BGNES

The National Revenue Agency has started inspections of 1,900 employers in Sofia a significant number of whose employees receive the minimum monthly wage.

According to preliminary data of the agency, in 80% of the cases, there is a significant risk that the remuneration is minimal on paper only and the remainder is paid in cash. Previous checks have shown that, often, in cases when employers hide the real remuneration, they also hide their sales revenues in order to secure funds for the so-called black cash register, while remuneration in the capital exceeds by far the minimum monthly wage.

The inspections include a request for every employee to declare in written form the real amount of the remuneration, while NRA inspectors check cash registers, turnover registration and compliance with social security laws.

Social insurance contributions paid on lower remuneration lead to the inability of employees to prove the origin of their income. Thus, checks may be carried out regarding possible discrepancies between the property and income of the employees, added the agency.

If tax and social security violations are discovered, employers will be issued revision acts for the hidden sums for the last 5 years, interest due included.
