Bulgaria: Bulgarian Parliament Rejects Conscription

The Bulgarian Parliament has rejected conscription.

The project of the co-chairman of the Patriotic Front Krasimir Karakachanov did not receive the support of a majority of parliamentary deputies at first reading of the amendments to the Defence and Armed Forces Act.

According to Karakachanov’s proposal, men over the age of 18 have to be conscripted for 6 months or serve one year at an alternative job. Only 28 deputies supported the proposal, 15 were against and 70 abstained.
