Firefighters are still working to put out the flames that caught at least 9 km of forest area near Topolovgrad and Harmanli, Southeastern Bulgaria, authorities say.

The military will also lend a hand in fighting the flames later on Thursday. There is no immediate danger to the locals after several dozen people were evacuated, the mayor of Topolovgrad has made clear.

Bozhin Bozhinov has told Focus Radio harsher measures are needed against those involved in criminal negligence.

Three people were detained on Wednesday on suspicions of having caused the incident.

It is thought that a number of the fires throughout the country in the hottest summer months are caused by stubble burning.

Separately, another forest fire is raging in Sakar Mountain, in the municipality of Galabovo which is not far from Topolovgrad and which on Wednesday declared a state of emergency.
