Bulgaria: Bulgarian Prosecutor’s Office Confirms Arrest of Relative of Charlie Hebdo Attacker

Mourad Hamyd, a French citizen sought by France to face charges of “activities related to terrorism”, is in judicial custody at the National Investigation Service in Sofia, the Bulgarian prosecuting authorities have confirmed.

According to French weekly Le Journal de Dimanche, Hamyd is a brother-in-law of Cherif Kouachi, who was one of the perpetrators of the terror attack on Charlie Hebdo satirical newspaper in Paris last year.

Hamyd was initially detained for 24 hours on July 29 in the Bulgarian capital under a European Arrest Warrant issued by the French authorities, the prosecutor’s Office of Bulgaria said in a statement on Monday.

The Sofia City Court ordered Hamyd’s detention in judicial custody on August 2 in order to ensure the future proceedings for his extradition to France, according to the statement.

The court will hold a hearing on the European Arrest Warrant issued against Mourad Hamyd on Wednesday afternoon.
