The Bulgarian police have detained three people suspected of running an organized group for the smuggling of refugees from Turkey to Europe.

Thirty-two foreign nationals were also detained during the police operation conducted jointly with State Agency for National Security (DANS), the Ministry of the Interior in Sofia said in a statement on Thursday.

None of the foreign nationals carried identity documents. All of them claimed to be Iraqi citizens.

The 32 foreign nationals – men, women and children – were discovered in the back of a van which the police stopped for inspection in the city of Burgas, on the Black Sea coast, on Wednesday. One of the suspected people smugglers, a woman, was the driver of the van.

Two men, who escorted the van in separate cars, were also detained in Burgas.

The three arrested suspects are residents of the city of Kyustendil, in southwestern Bulgaria, close to the border with Macedonia, according to the statement.

A suspected accomplice to the trio, a man, was detained in Kyustendil on Wednesday.
