Thirteen of twenty-eight Bulgarian regions have been placed under a "Red Index" alert over a high risk of fire, the national weather service says.

The regions affected are Pleven, Ruse, Targovishte, Razgrad, Silistra, Dobrich, Varna, Burgas, Yambol, Kardzhali, Haskovo, Stara Zagora and Sliven, according to the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH)'s website.

The risk of wildfires that could spread quickly covering large areas, making it more difficult for firefighters to put them out, is high for the regions in question, NIMH says.

Wildfires have raged across Bulgaria in the past few days as thermometers hit 38 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country, devastating areas of forests, meadows, crops, and property.
