Nearly 30 000 Bulgarians emigrated last year, most of them being young people in working age.
At the same time, 25 223 people from abroad settled to live in Bulgaria in 2015, with men outnumbering women.
This is revealed by the official statistics provided by the Institute for Population and Human Studies to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAN), Darik radio informed on Tuesday.
Half of the immigrants settling in Bulgaria came from three countries - Turkey, Syria and Russia.
One quarter of the immigrants were from Turkey, 15 % came from Syria, with Russians numbering around 14 %.
The rest of the immigrants came from other countries, including from member states of the EU.
The majority of immigrants (35.4 %) were in the 20-39 age group, followed by people aged between 40 and 59 (29.9 %). The immigrants aged above 60 constituted 17.5 %, while those under 20 years of age amounted to 17.2 %.
With 29 470 people having left Bulgaria last year, emigrants outnumbered immigrants, with the number of emigrating men exceeding that of women.
Germany, the UK and Spain were the top three preferred destinations for Bulgarian emigrants.
The majority of emigrants (43.6 %) were in the 20-39 age group, followed by people aged between 40-59 (25.3 %). Nearly a fifth (17.5 %) of people leaving Bulgaria were under the age of twenty.
One quarter of Bulgarian emigrants moved to Germany, followed by the UK and Spain with each of the countries attracting 14 % of Bulgarian emigrants.
A total of 119 002 people moved within the country, with the majority of them (37.6 %) moving from urban areas to villages.
