Large queues of vehicles formed at key checkpoints along Bulgaria's borders with Greece and Turkey on Saturday.

As usual, traffic was the busiest at Kulata checkpoint on the border with Greece, which is the main route used by tourists traveling to Bulgaria's southern neighbour.

The situation is additionally hampered after Greece introduced toll taxes earlier this week. Upon entering Greece, people traveling with cars have to pay EUR 2.4. The fare for trucks is between EUR 6 and EUR 8.5, while motorbikes are charged EUR 1.7.

According to customs officials, who opened additional desk at Kulata checkpoint, the reason for the intensive traffic is the large number of travelers during the weekend.

The queues are also due to the large number of traveling children as more documents have to be presented to allow them to cross the border. Among the required documents are a copy of birth certificate and letter of consent in case the children are traveling with only one of their parents.

Due to a protest of Greek railway workers, the night trains between Sofia and Thessaloniki will be suspended on Saturday and Sunday, while daily trains will only run between Sofia and Kulata.

There was also intensive traffic at checkpoints on the border with Turkey as those who had come home in Bulgaria for the holy month of Ramadan are now heading back.

Despite the minimum checks conducted by Bulgarian customs officials, queues of cars formed at Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint.

Large queues also formed at Makaza checkpoint on the border with Greece. Apart from the traditional Bulgaria and Romanian tourists traveling to Greece on Saturdays, there were also many Turkish citizens returning home from the Ramadan holiday who had chosen to travel through Greece.

According to travelers, some of them had to wait for two hours to pass through the checkpoint. The hot weather and slow passage are making the people nervous despite the quick processing of documents.

Queues are expected to form in the opposite direction in the afternoon.
