The number of victims of a powerful explosion that hit Iraqi capital Baghdad on Saturday has risen to more than 200, officials say.

The blast hit a predominantly Shia neighborhood as the streets were packed with people who had gone out after sunset during the holy month of Ramadan.

Hundreds were wounded, and more bodies were pulled out of the rubble on Monday morning, according to Al Jazeera.

It will take days to recover all the bodies, according to members of the civil defense forces.

The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Three-day national mourning began on Sunday.

The same day, Iraqis protested against the government for failing to provide safety.

Saturday's attack in the neighborhood of Karada is the deadliest in Iraq this year.
