Populists in the UK who created unreasonable expectations among voters in the Leave campaign should bear their consequences for the result, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov noted on Monday.

Mitov attended, alongside other EU ministers, a discussion in Warsaw dedicated to the future relations between the EU and Britain.

"We all expect of Britain to inform member states of its future intentions, since this will allow us to take our own decisions and hold a more informed discussions in the EU27 format," Bulgaria's diplomat noted.

He called for a "frank, responsible and rational debate" on the consequences of Brexit, but also for reform and further integration within the EU. "It is in our interest to use the challenges to change the union and finish with the policies that were not carried out for decades," Mitov noted. He pointed to the need to remove red tape, make the single market more efficient, boost competitiveness and solve problems such as migration.

He added that "national government should bear their responsibility for what is happening in their own countries and the lack of reform."
