Bathing at the Officers' beach in Bulgaria’s Black Sea capital of Varna has been prohibited due to polluted water.
This is shown by the results of the samples collected by the regional health inspectorate in Varna from all 23 beaches in the region.
The sample from the Officers' beach shows heightened presence of E. coli and enterococcus bacteria, their amount being double the norm.
Specialists warn that bathing in the area poses risks of stomach-intestine infections and allergies. The ban will be in force for a minimum of ten days.
In three days, the inspection will collect new samples and if there is an improvement another test will be conducted in a week’s time and only then the ban can be lifted.
For years, the Officers' beach has been one of the dirtiest in Varna and almost each year authorities have issued bathing bans. The pollution is caused by a sewage pipe in need of repair for which funding is being sought.
The water in the remaining 22 beaches is suitable for bathing. The inspections on the quality of the water will continue throughout the whole season.
