The European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) presented retired Bulgarian volleyball player Vladimir Nikolov with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

At a European Volleyball Gala in Rome on Thursday, CEV awarded Nikolov and seven other volleyball players for their contribution to raising the profile of volleyball to unprecedented heights.

CEV described the Bulgarian as possessing a “lion heart” and being a man, player, coach and teacher who never gives up and serves as role model for young people.

For many years Nikolov was captain of Bulgaria’s national volleyball team and most recently he helped the team win the fourth place in last year’s European Championship co-hosted by Bulgaria and Italy.

He retired at the age of 38 with a farewell match held at the Arena Armeec hall in Sofia in May.
