Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev will deliver a statement before the European Parliament on Wednesday.

The speech, which is scheduled to begin at 13 o'clock (EET), is dedicated to the future of Europe and the current challenges that the EU is facing.

Prior to the speech, Plevneliev will hold a meeting with European Parliament President Martin Schulz. After the end of the plenary session, the two will hold a joint press conference.

The statement of the president and his press conference with Schulz will be broadcasted live at the website of the European Parliament.

Plevneliev will be the second Bulgarian president to address the European Parliament since the accession of Bulgaria to the EU in 2007.

On Tuesday, the Bulgarian president met with former European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, who was in Bulgaria to deliver a public lecture on “Digital citizens of Europe and the world” in Sofia University.

Plevneliev and Barroso shared the opinion that the European idea needs a new wave of support not only from EU institutions but also from the governments of the member states and European citizens.

The two agreed that the numerous crises around and within the EU necessitate the unity of European states in seeking common solutions.

According to Plevneliev, the migration crisis is the key test for the capability of EU member states to act in solidarity and unity.

He reminded that Bulgaria is one of the few countries which fully complies with the Dublin Regulation and registers all migrants.

The Bulgarian head of state once again highlighted that the EU should distinguish between people fleeing war and economic migrants.

Plevneliev and Barroso shared the opinion that a possible exit of the UK from the EU could put the idea of united Europe under threat and could trigger a new crisis.

Plevneliev thanked Barroso for his continuous support in the process of European integration of Bulgaria.

The former European Commission president highlighted that since the start of the accession negotiations Bulgaria has always been one of the most pro-EU oriented countries.

Barroso thanked personally Plevneliev for his important contribution to developing the European project.
