A final decision on a five-point referendum dealing with fuel prices and other issues will lie with Parliament as a checkup of signatures delivered by the initiators has shown many of them are void.

In May, pharmaceutical entrepreneur and petrol station owner Veselin Mareshki submitted a referendum proposal under which citizens should have a say on several issues, including the introduction of state regulation in the fuels market to ensure lower end prices.

A national poll has already been scheduled for October, possibly alongside the forthcoming presidential elections, submitted by popular TV host Slavi Trifonov.

Two of Trifonov and Mareshki's questions largely overlap (a cut in the number of MPs and of state subsidies allocated to parties in Parliament). Separately, President Plevneliev has referred Trifonov's petition to the constitutional court.

Mareshki is running for president this autumn, but denies any connection between the referendum and his intentions.
