Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the role of united Europe in maintaining peace and stability in the world, the government press office in Sofia announced on Monday.

The two heads of government met in Luxembourg prior to the official celebration of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the European People’s Party (EPP).

"The European Union guarantees peace and humanity in times of crises. The Union shows how to protect human rights and defend core values," Borisov said, according to a statement from the government press office.

While sometimes decisions to show solidarity with asylum seekers were not the easiest ones to make, they nevertheless were right, if consistent with the protection of human life, Borisov added.

He also said that European states need to show solidarity with the countries worst affected by the current migration crisis as they have done ever since the Union was founded.
