Heavy traffic is expected across Bulgarian on Tuesday as the last of the long weekends in May is coming to an end.

On Tuesday, Bulgaria is celebrating the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavonic Alphabet.

This is the third long weekend in May after the previous two in the beginning of the month, which were on the occasion of the Easter holiday and Saint George's Day.

According to estimates, around 280 000 people embarked on trips for the long weekend, around 115 000 of whom went abroad.

The most popular destinations were the domestic mountain and Black Sea resorts as well as historical cities such as Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo. Another 32 000 Bulgarians are estimated to have traveled to Greece.

Heightened traffic is expected at the entrances of Sofia, on Trakia, Hemus and Struma motorways as well as on the I-1 (E-79) road between Sofia and Kulata checkpoint at the border with Greece.

Two lanes for traffic in the direction of Sofia at the Eleshnitsa viaduct on Hemus motorway and on I-1 (E-79) road have been provided.

The Road Infrastructure Agency (API) reminds that Lyulin motorway can be used as an alternative route to the I-1 (E-79) road.

From 14 to 20 o'clock (EET), the movement of trucks with weight above twelve tonnes is restricted on motorways and the busiest routes.

In Sofia, traffic is expected to be additionally hampered by the high school proms and the final for the Bulgarian Cup between the football teams of CSKA Sofia and Montana, which is scheduled to begin at 20 o'clock (EET) at the Vasil Levski National Stadium.
