Bulgaria’s sole Kozloduy nuclear power plant has completed the planned annual maintenance of one of its two operating reactors.

The 1,000-MW Unit 5 was reconnected to the grid following inspection and authorisation issued by the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, the power plant said in a statement on Monday.

In addition to routine repairs of Unit 5 systems and equipment a number of operations were carried out according to plans to extend the operational life of the unit and increase the heat output of the reactor , including inspection of the steam turbines, steam separator superheaters, vessels and pipelines as well asmodernization of the separation system of two steam generators.

The planned annual maintenance, which started on April 9, also included loading fresh nuclear fuel into the reactor.

Kozloduy’s other operating reactor, Unit 6, runs at maximum capacity, according to the statement.

The power plant on the bank of the Danube river operates two Russian-made VVER pressurized water reactors with generation capacity of 1,000 MW each.
