The District Court in Radnevo issued a suspended sentence of five months imprisonment and one-year probation to a young man found guilty of injuring police officers during clashes in this town in southern Bulgaria earlier this month, public radio broadcaster BNR reported on Friday.

Another young man was sentenced to six-month probation for the same offence.

The sentences were issued under an agreement between the prosecution and lawyers for the defence and cannot be appealed.

The court found that the convicted young men threw stones at police officers sent to prevent a clash between Radnevo inhabitants of Roma origin and ethnic Bulgarians on May 4.

Radnevo was the scene of daily protests at the beginning of May demanding justice for three ethnic Bulgarians severely beaten by a group of Roma men in a scuffle over right of way that followed a minor road accident. 

Prosecutors have charged four Roma men with attempted murder for the beating.
