State of emergency has been declared in Bulgaria’s northwestern municipalities of Mizia and Hayredin, both in the region of Vratsa, due to overflowing dams.
The dams “Rogozen-1” and “Barzina” are overflowing due to the abundant rainfall in the past days, daily Dnevnik informs.
The regional governor of Vratsa has declared a state of emergency which is in force from 21 o’clock (EET) on Saturday to 21 o’clock (EET) on Monday.
The mayors of municipalities in the region have been informed to take necessary measures for the protection of the population.
At present, there is no direct threat to the population. Pumps are being installed at the “Rogozen-1” dam.
Some of the people living in areas prone to flooding along the course of the Skat river have been evacuated.
The dam Rogozen near the village of the same name is also overflowing.
Prime Minister Boyko Borisov ordered Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova to visit Rogozen.
Upon her visit to the affected area, Bachvarova assured herself that authorities have taken all preventive measures and have brought the situation under control.
Joint teams of police officers and firefighters have warned the people from the villages of Barzina, Botevo, Lipnitsa, Krushovitsa, Voyvodovo and Saraevo of the potential danger.
As of Sunday morning, the water level of the dam has dropped by sixty centimeters.
The town of Mizia was the site of a deadly flooding in August 2014 which claimed the lives of two people.
