Bulgaria: Tourists Stuck on Greek Islands by Strike Can Book Emeregency Flights to Mainland - BNR

Tourists stuck on Greek islands since Friday due to a general strike that has halted ferry services will be transported to the mainland by air, Bulgarian public radio BNR reported on Saturday.

The tourists will be carried to the Greek airports in Athens and Thessaloniki.

Air carriers haven’t joined the general strike in Greece called over disputed draft legislation for changes to the pension insurance system.

There are enough seats on the planes and any tourist wishing to leave the islands can book a seat, according to BNR. Travel agencies will provide free shuttle bus services to tourists.

About 500 Bulgarian tourists were stuck on Greece’s Aegean island of Santorini due to the strike of ferry companies on Friday. Many Bulgarians have decided to travel to Greece for the long weekend. Friday, May 6 was a holiday in Bulgaria.

With ferry services from Greek islands set to resume only on Tuesday morning tourists have the option to stay there until then or take a flight home earlier. The emergency flights to the mainland will run through Tuesday, BNR said.

The strike has crippled transport across Greece with train services halted until Monday and public transport off on Saturday.

Shortages of petrol and diesel could be expected on Sunday when owners of filling stations will join the strike, BNR said.
