Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu will not run for his Justice and Development Party (AKP)'s leadership at a congress due on May 22, party officials have announced.

A meeting was held of the AKP's Central Executive Board (MYK) ahead of a press conference of Davutoglu which si to be held later in the afternoon, according to Hurriyet Daily News.

The Prime Minister met President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday, amid reported tensions over the latter's plans to switch to a presidential system.

Under AKP rules, the Prime Minister is also the leader of the party.
